The MNSCIA opens eyes during its campaign for Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month

9/22/2013

On September 21, members of the Minnesota Spinal Cord Injury Association (MNSCIA) gathered with medical professionals at the "Bridging Together: Advanced Spinal Cord Injury Conference,” to educate nurses, therapists, and doctors on what it is like to live with a spinal cord injury (SCI).

We also presented more than two dozen mayoral proclamations declaring September, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month in cities across Minnesota.

As part of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, we recognized a need for increased attention to resources, education, and investment in research to improve the lives of Minnesotans with SCIs. To meet this need for increased visibility, the MNSCIA worked with Mayors and City Councils across Minnesota to write proclamations and raise awareness of those with SCIs' needs.

The MNSCIA, also used the “Bridging Together” event to communicate these needs to medical professionals from across Minnesota.

Thanks to the following mayors and city councils who helped raise awareness in their communities by signing proclamations.

  • Mayor R.T. Rybak of Minneapolis
  • Mayor Darell Olson of Baxter
  • Mayor Jim Dagg of Thief River Falls
  • Mayor James B. Hovlund of Edina

Roll on Capitol Hill

On June 26 & 27, I attended the Roll on Capitol Hill. The Roll on Capitol Hill is an annual legislative advocacy event that addresses issues that directly impact the health, independence and quality of life of individuals living with spinal cord injury or disease. There were members of NSCIA chapters from all over the country in attendance.

We spent one day learning about political issues that will impact those with spinal cord injuries and the next day discussing these issues with Minnesota representatives from the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. In the latest issue of United Spinal’s Life in Action, I wrote a short blurb about one of my Capitol Hill visits. My article is below. To read more about The Roll on Capital see the full advocacy issue of United Spinal’s, Life in Action.

Roll on Capital Hill- A Thin Scratch

Before The Roll on Capitol Hill, I thought people with disabilities that protested and lobbied were just plain weird. I thought that I couldn’t change anything, so why bother trying.

My thoughts on the subject changed when my appointment in Rep. Michelle Bachman’s office began. Before the meeting started, I was summoned through a narrow passage to a meeting room. I slowly and carefully tried to squeeze through the passage, but my wheels rubbed, my chair twisted, and I was stuck. I backed up and tried to fit through the passage again. I failed.

On my third try, I made it through the skinny hallway and left a thin scratch on the side of the wall.

This tiny experience got me thinking—If our representatives aren’t considering wheelchair users when they set up their offices, then they probably aren’t thinking of us when they are doing legislation.

How do we make them think of us? We need to show our faces, tell our stories, and let them know that cutting programs that matter to us hurts. Roll on Capital Hill gave me a voice and hopefully left more than a thin scratch in policy makers’ ears.

On Jan. 24, just like most days, I woke up early and someone helped me get into my power wheelchair. It takes me a lot longer to get ready in the morning ever since Aug. 3 of 2000, when a spinal cord injury (SCI) rendered me a C5-6 quadriplegic.

Dear Friends,

Give to the Max Day was created in 2009 to increase giving to nonprofit organizations across the state and move more giving online. It is a day for Minnesotans to come together to raise as much money as possible for nonprofits and schools in 24 hours—starting at midnight on November 15, 2012 through midnight on November 16, 2012. By engaging as many donors as possible to give to their favorite Minnesota charities in one day

As you know, the mission of The Minnesota Spinal Cord Injury Association is to make quality spinal cord injury resources easily accessible in Minnesota and identify ways to close gaps in resources availability. As a low-budget nonprofit your generous support means the world to help us continue to develop the kinds of resources that will assist Minnesotans with spinal cord injuries in the most beneficial way now more than ever.

Join us on November 15, Minnesota’s Give to the Max Day, and help us win a $1,000 Golden Ticket. By partnering with GiveMN—an online giving website for Minnesota nonprofits—The Minnesota Spinal Cord Injury Association will have 25 chances to maximize your gift on Give to the Max Day!

By making a donation on Give to the Max Day, your donation gift could help us win an extra $1,000 for our work in the community.

At the end of Give to the Max Day, one donation from across Minnesota will be randomly selected for a $10,000 Supersized Golden Ticket! Help us increase our odds by making your gift on November 15 by visiting www.GiveMN.org and searching for The Minnesota Spinal Cord Injury Association!

Together, we hope to raise $10,000 on Give to the Max Day and we’re counting on your help! Follow us on Facebook or Twitter so you can share in the excitement of the giving day and remember to give November 15.

Sincerely,

Shawn Dean

MNSCIA President
